Will 17″ Long Material Work in My Printer?

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Not all laser and inkjet printers will accommodate 17″ long label sheets. It’s important for you to know your printer’s capabilities before you order 17″ material from us. Many inkjet printers can run 17″ material as a banner. To check if your printer can take 17″ material, please go to your printer manufacturer’s website and type in the model number of the printer and the word “banner.” Also, check to see if they sell any 17″ material for your inkjet printer. For example, go to www.hp.com and type into the search box “720C media”. The result is a web page that shows how to print banners for the HP 720C inkjet printer. The site shows that a banner switch must be flipped on the printer; that the user needs to be sure that their printer driver is updated to have a banner setting, and that the software used can size a long sheet or banner. To check if your laser printer can take 17″ long material, please go to your laser printer manufacturer’s website and type in the model number of the printer and the word “media”. Check to see if they have any 17″ material for your laser printer or if the media handling specs allow 17″. For example, go to www.hp.com and type into the search box “6P media”. You’ll see a web page that shows material sizes for the HP 6P laser printer. The longest sheet available is 14″, so the 6P will not accommodate 17″ long material.

Businesses that lease laser printers pay a “click charge” for each sheet that runs through the printer. For that reason, people often want to print the biggest sheet possible to get the lowest monthly click charge. Please keep in mind that both inkjet and laser printers do not hold their registration very well. In other words, the sheets don’t always run through the printers absolutely straight. If your registration is off (i.e. if your sheets is a little crooked in the printer,) the top rows of graphics may appear in place, but the lower rows will be increasing more and more out of registration. Thus, some of the lower label rows may not be usable. We recommend using 8.5″ × 11″ sheets whenever possible to avoid the “out of registration” problem.
